If you are staying in Nuevo Vallarta you have to try LA LAGUNA, a small, rustic restaurant on a lagoon. It is on the first entrance to Nuevo Vallarta road. The seafood is amazing and the bird watching will keep you fascinated for hours. Southside lunch? CHILI’S is a great option and is one block from the El Dorado on Los Muertos beach. Baron of Beef, Roasted Chicken and the best barbecued hamburgers in Puerto Vallarta. Do you just feel like a overdose of Ceviche or a seafood cocktail? Don’t miss OCHO TOSTADAS, right behind Marina del Rey condos in Marina Vallarta. The seafood is fresh and this place is packed daily for lunch. |

SOME INTERESTING LOCAL PEOPLE |

This is Nicole, Puerto Vallarta’s most enthusiastic new real estate agent and her pet Zebra, Durcha. This photo was taken last New Year’s Eve in Yelapa, a great little town in the bay that is only accessed by boat. Nicole, Benitto and friends spent this holiday camping on the beach. The lower photo is of the inside of their tent, furniture, carpet and a fruit bowl? Wow, camping is sure not what it used to be. Nicole is a big fan of Martha Stewart and she provides us with our Recipe of the Month for our Fishing Report newspaper column. |

This group was asked repeatedly by visitors if it was legal to camp on a beach in Yelapa. Benitto replied, as he mixed yet another martini, “Everything is legal in Yelapa”. From left to right in the photo, Sergio, George and Benitto outside of the tent, Veronica and Nicole. Durcha is not really a Zebra, just an overweight black Lab but she loves to dress up for an occasion. If you would like to see some properties while on your vacation, be sure to send Nicole an E-mail. Yeah, yeah, a daughter but you will love to meet her. She decorates a great tent! |

Nicole’s swimsuit is a NINGUN PECADO, Mexico’s hottest line of swim and casual wear. Yeah, yeah, the daughter Kim’s company but the swimwear is fabulous. |

AND WHO THE HECK IS PHIL? |
|
Phil in PV was born in Dublin, Georgia a long time ago. He grew up in Southern California and eventually worked as Harbor Master at the Isthmus on Catalina Island. He has spent his entire life fishing in some way or another. In 1992 he moved to Puerto Vallarta and soon decided that this town was where he was supposed to be and doesn’t like to venture too far inland for any reason. Second to fish, Phil loves Cats. He has a few of his own and they all love to bring their friends from the jungle home for fish dinner (and breakfast as well). |

Phil in PV was born in Dublin, Georgia in 1954. He grew up in Southern California and eventually worked as Harbor Master at the Isthmus on Catalina Island. He has spent his entire life fishing in some way or another. In 1992 he moved to Puerto Vallarta and soon decided that this town was where he was supposed to be and doesn't like to venture too far inland for any reason. Phil developed a passion for the potential of the sport fishing that Puerto Vallarta had to offer and realized that the Bay of Banderas and areas beyond were highly under rated as a World class destination. He made many friends among the local sport fishing captains and encouraged them to venture beyond the bay and fish the areas that were relatively unknown in ’92. La Corbetena became better known and the need for faster boats and longer charters proved to provide exciting adventures for visiting anglers. One of Phil’s first surprises in the offshore waters was a 409 pound Yellowfin tuna. This would have easily been a world record and sparked an interest among the fishing community. More and more sport fishing captains began to offer trips to La Corbetena and eventually El Banco which has by now become renowned for its consistent abundance of giant Yellowfin. It was a strange sight back in the early 90s to see Phil balancing on the bow of a boat and casting jigs into the schools of Bonito and schooling Yellowfin. This method of catching bait made it possible to target the trophy fish without having to resort to the sad bait that was offered in the marina. Little by little this practice expanded and now it is rare to see a sport fisher without a mate on the bow with a outfit. Tuna tubes have become a necessity and few boats operate without at least several. Over the years, Phil realized that despite popular belief, Roosterfish and Yellowfin tuna could be caught on artificial bait. He began experimenting with Ranger lures to hit Roosters from the beach but because of the cost of these lures, Phil began to craft ranger style lures as well as poppers out of Mexican hardwood. The poppers proved to be a huge success with the Roosterfish and surprisingly enough were very effective with the Yellowfin in all sizes. Now, poppers have become the lure of the decade and all of the top Captains use them to target giant tuna at La Corbetena and El Banco. As well as serious big game trips, Phil offers Kid Friendly charters. He always accompanies children and makes certain that they are on a suitable boat with a crew that specializes in family trips. Phil provides kid sized gear and does his best to entertain and educate Fisher Kids on the thrill of fishing as well as the marine life and our local eco system. |
