What a surprise for Phil to finally discover Cajon de Peñas.  He had taken a few trips to Agua Milpa, a lengthy drive beyond Tepic that is nearly impossible to do in one day.  Cajon de Peñas is just 1 1/2 hours to the south and a remarkably beautiful area.  A wildlife explosion of nature that is unbelievable.  In the course of the day, Phil saw eagles, egrets, owls, hawks, this is a bird watchers paradise. 

And the fishing is an added bonus.  Upon arriving in the morning, Phil found Captain Jose and the canoe style panga was ready to go.  The scenery was fantastic and they passed island after island but the captain had his own favorite spot and he was right.  Phil landed a very nice 5 pound large mouth bass and was sold on Cajon de Peñas. 

If you have a rental car, just call Phil and he will give you directions to the lake.  On his first attempt, Phil passed the turn off by 27 kilometers but he learned an important lesson.  If you reach the town of Tomatlan, you have gone 27 kilometers too far.  

If Phil is not out hunting big game and has a free day, he can take you on a guided excursion to Cajon de Peñas.  With or without fish, this area is definitely worth visiting while vacationing in Puerto Vallarta.
